Abstract

Patxi Xabier Lezama Perier one of the representative live artists of the Basque scene, remains active after more than three decades of activity. Biscayan creator who is part of the generation of Basque sculptors who have been born and raised with the magic of mythology. The artist's work focuses mainly on Basque mythological sculpture as well as the old masters of the best known current of Basque art such as: Jorge Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida, Agustín Ibarrola, Néstor Basterretxea, etc. Surrealism differentiates it from those marked by abstraction and geometric schematism. He was born in a town known for its popular culture and especially for its mythology where the supernatural superstitions of sorcerers and witchcraft were widely extended reinterpreting the Basque mythological world through the art of sculpture, transmitting and assuming value systems that go more beyond the visual, from a historical and cultural perspective of an ancient legacy mythology of the past that transmits to future generations. Broadly speaking, Patxi Lezama's style has evolved over thirty years, representing mythology in a different way, as if it were taken to a level of the human subconscious where the rules disappear. Wrought iron and stone is the material that it uses, but above all the recycled wood of old hamlets or baserris, material that it recovers and transforms into unique and exclusive works with specifically ethnic-cultural features.
