Abstract

A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Archaeology 1978. The focus of this research has been to try to discover when the art of pottery making began in southeastern Europe, to delineate the surrounding events from its first appearance to its subsequent development from monochrome globular wares to the exquisitely painted and shaped vessels of the fully developed neolithic and chalcolithic periods, seventh to fifth millennia B.C. Ceramic samples from three main sites were studied in detail to determine how the earliest pottery was manufactured and any technical changes through time. Some variables considered pertained to clays and paints used, form and design, temper and firing techniques, and vessel usage. The research revealed that the early ceramics of viii southeastern Europe were made with surface earthenware clays which, due to their composition, did not allow for use as cooking pots. These same surface clays and soils were also used for farming, thereby linking pottery making to the subsistence economy (plants and animals) of the settlements. It was postulated that changes in the economy would be reflected in the pottery samples and this was demonstrated in the sites surveyed. It could not be demonstrated that the earliest vessels were used near fire, rather they seemed to be manufactured as storage vessels and as dishes to display fruits and vegetables. Some vessels such as the hanging types may have been early churns and others may have been used for milking or making yoghurt.. The long tradition of symbolic floral and geometric designs on painted wares indicates a ritualistic use for all of these types.
